An article I recently read in the Huffington Post stated that a new book of translated quotations by the artist Ai Weiwei called Weiwei-isms, published by the Princeton University Press, will be available December 12.
What is interesting about the book is its design mimics Mao Zedong’s infamous little red book, Quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong. It is small (4 x 5 inches) with three or four quotes per page. These quotes, according to the book’s introduction, have been “excerpted from Ai’s own newspaper articles, Twitter posts, media interviews, and other sources [and] organized around six themes: freedom of expression; art and activism; government, power, and making moral choices; the digital world; history and the future; and personal reflections.”
It will be interesting to see if Ai’s book will become as popular in the English speaking world as Mao’s is in the Chinese one.
